white bear lake downtownOnly 20 miles northeast of the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, White Bear Lake maintains its own small-town character. The community of about 25,000 sits on the lake its named after and features a little bit of everything. Its historic downtown includes numerous vendors offering everything from arts and crafts to hardware, while more modern outskirts include a shopping mall and discount stores.

Golf on the city’s two golf courses – Dellwood Hills Golf Club and Oneka Ridge Fold Course.

Manitou Days kicks off with a Grande Parade and continues for 10 days with events that include a pickle bucket boat race, where participants build and race baots made of pickle buckets.

The BEAR’ly Open Golf Tournament in January on frozen White Bear Lake raises money for the local food shelf. Vendors sponsor the various holes, providing treats for energy and warmth.

Polar Bear Plunge draws nearly 850 plungers and raises more than $149,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota.

Industries continue to focus on medical research and the creation of medical devices and solar panels.

Century Community College is the largest two-year college in the state, and it has seen its enrollment grow in response to displaced workers seeking retraining and new careers.

The hospitality industry is also growing due in part to families traveling to youth tournaments: it is becoming a new style of family vacation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhite Bear Lake High School’s north campus houses 11th and 12th grades, while the south campus houses 9th and 10th grades. There are also two junior highs, several neighborhood elementary schools and Catholic and Lutheran parochial schools. An agricultural and food science school in Vadnais Heights focuses on sciences.

Healthcare: seven clinics can be found in White Bear Lake, and St. John’s Hospital is just over the border in Maplewood.
