A: Interior Designer Betty Ravnik suggests three key things every mudroom should have:

  1. A good rug. “There’s so many beautiful indoor/outdoor rugs” she says. That “outdoor” aspect is what makes it so functional – it’s made to handle moisture from snow and rain. And get a big one, Betty adds, so several people can stand on it and still close the door.
  2. A bench or chair. A bench is a very multipurpose piece. You can sit on it or set things on it as you enter the home.
  3. Storage. “Cubbies or individual space is really important,” Betty says, especially if there are kids in the home. “They put things away then.” Every family member should have a spot for boots, coats, sports equipment and other gear.
