Handcrafted cocktails, a rotating beer selection, and deliciously creative bar food are cultivating a loyal following at Brew Ales & Eats.

The restaurant and bar, located on Main Street in Perham, is setting a new standard for local eating and drinking establishments. Wood and metal architectural elements are creatively utilized to set a fun and relaxing rustic industrial atmosphere.

The story behind the successful business starts with owners Alex and Britt Belquist. The couple moved to the area and ran a little bar attached to The Station House in Perham from May 2011 until July 2012. Alex, whose culinary background includes time studying at Le Cordon Bleu, was eager to open their own place where he could craft an innovative new menu.

Brew 2“Alex’s parents are both entrepreneurs, so I think their drive and ambition was passed on to Alex. He was the one to really take the leap to open Brew,” explains Britt Belquist. “We loved living in St. Paul and having such a variety of neighborhood pubs and different restaurants. When we saw Perham and what a thriving community it is, yet how few bars and restaurants there were, we saw the need for a new place.”

“We wanted to bring the ‘neighborhood pub’ to Perham—a place for people to gather for after work drinks, watch a game, relax with family, celebrate with friends, listen to live music, and try new food and drinks,” she continues. “We want to be a place where everyone can get together and a place where we have something to offer to everyone.”

Brew Ales & Eats has twenty four beers on tap, some of them mainstays and others rotating. Seasonal varieties are extremely popular. They also offer beer flights, four 4-ounce pours of any beer on tap, giving people the opportunity to try several different beers.

“Our beer selection sets us apart,” Belquist acknowledges. “But not only do we offer great beer, we have also come up with some really awesome handcrafted cocktails. We like to have our staff participate in the creation of those. It’s great to put their ideas on our menus and watch them quickly become guest favorites. I recommend our ginger mojito. It’s amazing, and it’s the perfect summer drink!”

If you’re looking for some tasty food, the Brew Burger is the restaurant’s take on the classic American burger—topped with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and homemade burger sauce (ketchup, mayo, mustard, pickles, and spices all in one). Or try the enormous and satisfying Breubens. The Breuben is a Brew burger combined with a Reuben sandwich. All of the burgers are hand-pattied and come fresh from the local meat locker.

“Our goat cheese quesadilla is a really popular appetizer,” Belquist adds. “It features chicken, bacon, goat cheese spread, candied walnuts, balsamic dressing, and citrus chimichurri sauce for dipping. Our house cut fries and chips are really popular too. We serve them with a variety of house made sauces. Our chipotle aioli is definitely the favorite sauce—spicy and delicious!”

In the summer, customers have the option to enjoy their favorite food or beverage on the outdoor patio. If the weather is not cooperating, the restaurant’s interior is just as pleasant with creative art and design elements throughout the space. In fact, Fargo architect Chris Hawley received a design award for his outstanding work at Brew.

Alex and Britt Belquist recently partnered with Gretchen and Nate Hunter to open a second Brew location in Detroit Lakes. Although the two restaurants share many of the same menu items, each location has its own signature offerings. While Alex created most of the menu, the head chefs at each restaurant are also involved in creating new food items. Head chefs Eric Henre, Perham Brew, and David Grimsley, Detroit Lakes Brew, have both come up with a few items on each restaurant’s menu.

One offering unique to the Detroit Lakes location is “flight nights” every Tuesday. Once a week customers can get a flight of beer paired with four tastings of food, including a mini appetizer, mini salad/side, mini entrée, and a mini dessert. Brew Ales & Eats in Perham features live music every Friday and Saturday night.
